Played Starcraft

"With its excellent campaign, elegantly designed factions, and simple to learn but deep, strategic gameplay, Starcraft is the defining game of its genre. It is the standard by which all real-time strategy games are judged."
--Bob Colayco in Gamespot's article The Greatest Games of All Time
This is another one I had put this off for a while. Early in the year, I had planned to do this on Frankie's birthday, but since we ended up going to Las Vegas that weekend, I again delayed it. I realize Starcraft is a 13 year old game, which is why it's weird that I've never played it, especially since it's regarded by many as the greatest real-time strategy game of all time.
Developed by Blizzard Entertainment and released in 1998, Starcraft is known for pioneering unique factions in real time strategy games and for its compelling story. It's also extremely popular in South Korea, where they have professional competitions, sponsorships, and televised tournaments. In its first decade, Starcraft sold 9.5 million copies. 4.5 million of those were sold in South Korea.
RTS games have never really appealed to me because they require too many areas of my attention, and I don't feel multitasking is one of my strengths. Nevertheless, I decided I would give this one a shot.
I started off very slow by firing up the Terran campaign. Okay, so either I missed some sort of tutorial here or things just weren't very clear to me, but I had no idea what I was doing for a good couple of minutes. I was able to build some Marine units fairly easily, but beyond that I couldn't figure out what was going on.
I had traversed the entire map and killed everything in sight, but I had no clue on how to complete my objectives:
- Build 3 Supply Depots
- Build a Refinery
- Mine 100 gas
Eventually, I figured out that I needed to gather using my SCV units.

I constructed a refinery on top of the geyser just below where I started.

Soon after I did this, I completed the very simple mission.

Yes, I know. If you are an experienced Starcraft player, you're thinking I'm a total noob. Well, you're right. It's literally the first time I've ever played this game. I did have an issue with the mouse settings and the screen scrolling, but if I dig a little deeper into the settings, I'm sure I could find away to adjust this.
This was fun. I think I'll continue. Maybe I'll do one or two missions the next time I give it a try. I'd be really embarrassed if I were Korean though.
