Owned A Fish

It’s Friday the 13th.  I’m not a superstitious person, but in Chinese culture, owning a fish is considered good luck because the characters for fish and water are associated with wealth and plenty.

A dog is the only animal I’ve ever had as a pet, but ever since I was a kid, I had always wanted a pet fish.  I love the way fish move in the water.  I ordered a fish tank with a filter, a heater and a thermometer.

Today, we went to
Petco to pick out our new fish.  We went to the one at Lakeshore Plaza on Sloat.

J thought it would be a good idea to get a betta fish because they aren’t a lot of maintenance, and she knew I’d like the fact that they’re Siamese fighting fish.  I wanted an orange one because of my loyalty to the World Champion San Francisco Giants, but J told me that she read the orange ones were unique and difficult to find.

We looked around for a bit and found this little guy.  He’s a Male Veiltale Betta.

After picking up a plant, some fish food, some gravel and a net, I was good to go home with the little guy.

After I got home, I unpacked the fish tank.

I picked a spot for the tank, washed my gravel, put it in the bottom of the tank, and started filling the tank with water.

Once the water was filled up a good amount, I put the plant, the thermometer and the heater in the tank.

I conditioned the water and let it sit with the filter one for a day.  The next day, I put his bowl in our fish tank and gradually introduced him to the water inside the tank while removing some of the water he was swimming in.  This was to acclimate him to the water I was planning to put him in.

Eventually, I was ready to put him into his tank.

So far, it seems like he’s been enjoying his time in the tank.  Feeding him is a ton of fun.  Because he’s an orange fish, which is what I wanted, I named him after one of the Giants star pitchers.  His name is Swim Lincecum.  His full name is Swimothy Leroy Lincecum, but his nickname is Big Time Swimmy Jim.  Most of the time, we just call him Swimmy.

I’ve really enjoyed watching Swimmy.  He loves the area close to the filter for some reason, and I found him hanging out under the heater once.  Owning a fish is fun!
