Cut Star Wars Snowflakes (338/366)

“Control, control, you must learn control!”
~ Master Yoda, “The Empire Strikes Back

As I’ve mentioned several times before, I love the Holidays and decorating for them.  As I’ve also mentioned before, I am a geek.  So what better way to celebrate this special time of year and enjoy both of my loves than to make some geeked-out Holiday decorations?!  When I was on the other day, reading the article I mentioned in my Google Voice Search post, I noticed at the bottom of the page, a link for an article on a “DIY Hoth Winter Wonderland with Star Wars Snowflakes” – awesome!

I followed the link, and actually found a few other links on which this article was built: Anthony Herrera’s Star Wars snowflake collection, and the site that inspired him, the Matters of Grey Star Wars Snowflakes – so COOL (the pun just fits, come on!).

I started with the simplest design I could – the Republic logo:

There’s even a link to a tutorial on how to fold the paper properly, which I was grateful for – when I was a kid, there were many snowflakes I tried to cut that ended up separated because I hadn’t folded the paper right – duh.  After making my folds, I cut away.

Tada!  Republic credits will be fine.

With this simple design under my belt, I went on: the Imperial Logo – and then of course the symbol of the Rebel Alliance:

Then I went all crazy and actually tried a complicated one.  When you get to the more intricate designs, you need to use an X-Acto knife.  I’m really glad I got my retractable precision blade earlier this year – it’s perfect for small details like this.

After a LOT of careful cutting … awesomeness:

This was a really, really cool – but it takes a lot of patience, too.  But seriously, for a holiday-loving geek like myself, totally worth it.  May the Force be with you this Holiday Season!
