Learned to Play a Song on the Harmonica (289/366)

~ Bob Dylan

Today Nick and I watched the Steve Carell movie “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” (which we thought was pretty good, by the way – it didn’t get great reviews). In the movie, Carell’s character “Dodge” always carries his harmonica in his pocket and he plays it several times during the movie.

I’ve always thought harmonicas were neat – from the cowboys playing them in western movies to Billy Joel rocking out on one – my grandpa even had one and I played with it when I was a kid, but I never knew really how they worked or how to actually use one

One of the great things about the INDT project – you get an excuse to pursue things you have thought about and maybe been meaning to do but never got off your duff to try them. Kinda fitting after watching a movie about the world ending and how people might choose to spend the rest of their time, huh?

Anyway, I had purchased an inexpensive harmonica just for the project a while ago. Tonight, I busted it out!

The harmonica came with a little box to store it in, which is pretty cool – if I don’t get super great at it and want to carry it with me in my pocket everywhere (ha!), I can store it in its box at home and know it’s not getting all dusty and gross.  It also came with a sheet explaining how to hold the harmonica, and how the notes work. You get different sounds and notes through either exhaling into it or inhaling through it. Cool! The sheet teaches you how to do a simple scale (my harmonica is a basic “C” tuned one, but they come in different keys for when you want to be fancy and/or play in a group), and it teaches a bit about playing single notes vs. chords. Very neat.289HarmonicaStuffs

And finally, there is music for a simple song! The most exciting part! This one was “When the Saints Go Marching In.” After several tries (the exhale/inhale for notes is tricky!), I did okay. Have a listen:

And after I was feeling more comfortable with the whole thing, I tried putting some sauce on it. I could make the harmonica twang [kind of] like the cowboys do! Here’s my “sauced up” version (ha ha ha):

This was so much fun. I’d like to look up more songs for the harmonica – I think as I learn more, I’ll be able to figure out more songs on my own. And then I can bring my show on the road next time we go camping! Awesome!
