Had Mavericks “Alection” Brew (312/366)

“When you were elected in 2008, you inspired the world with a call to take responsibility for the problems we face as global citizens. Since then, you have made earnest efforts to live up to that great hope and trust placed in you by the American public. I believe you have been re-elected now in recognition of that effort.”
~ The Dalai Lama

Yesterday, President Barrack Obama was re-elected to his second term.  When we left his hometown of Honolulu at 3:00pm HST we weren’t sure if we’d be up all night watching election coverage, and by the time we landed in our hometown’s SFO at 9:30pm PST, America had chosen its President and Governor Mitt Romney was giving his concession speech.

About a week ago, Nick and I were in BevMo and saw that Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. had come out with bottles of Mavericks Ale labeled with each of the Presidential candidates on them.  Our friend Ken brewed a special batch of President Obama’s Honey Porter to enjoy on election day, and I knew he’d love one of these bottles as well, so I picked up one for me and one to send.  Tonight, I cracked open my bottle and toasted the President.

Mavericks Alection is Half Moon Bay Brewing Company’s Pillar Point Ale, a “Well-hopped English-style Ale brewed with English Maris Otter malt and East Kent Goldings hops.”  Yes, it’s the same brew in either bottle, which brought about a little criticism from some, but the point of the product was for people to be able to voice their opinion and choose one or the other based on their support for the candidate alone, not to be swayed by the brew inside the bottle.

This was a well-hopped ale – and though I’m not really into hoppy beers, I could appreciate the robust flavor in this, and the crisp freshness.  I love local craft beers, and was glad to support this one.  I had read a few articles about how these types of “consumer vote” products are usually pretty indicative of what will happen in the election.  I wonder which Chia Heads sold better …

The Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. even had people cast their votes for either Obama’s or Romney’s version of the Ale, and apparently the President won by a landslide there – 70% to 30% of the vote.  Cheers!

I’m not a big fan of the hoppy beers either, but I like this dubious quote that is associated with Benjamin Franklin, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
